Abel Ocanas- Performer, Private Lesson Instructor



Abel Ocañas was introduced to music at a young age when he became the drum set player for his dads’ “conjunto.”  Abel then went on to middle school and decided to join band and became a euphonium musician.   Abel was part of the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, All-Region Band and other chamber ensembles during his years in high school.

                After high school, Abel decided to attend the University of Texas-Pan American and has been part of the UTPA Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Brass Choir, Pep Band, Commencement Band, Men’s Chorus and Tuba Euphonium Studio receiving lessons from Dr. Scott Roeder.  Abel also assisted in starting the Mu Chi Chapter of the Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity and the International Tuba Euphonium Association Chapter at the University of Texas Pan American.  He is currently President in both the UTPA ITEA Chapter and the Mu Chi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.

                 With the great joy of performing, a few friends and Abel formed the RGV Tuba Euphonium Quartet. The quartet has been invited as the Guest Artists for the 2012 RGV Tuba Christmas. The RGV Tuba Christmas is one of the biggest in the nation and really a great honor.  The quartet has recently advanced to Semi-Finals in the 2012 International Tuba/Euphonium Conference Small Ensemble competition.

                Abel has also performed with the McAllen Symphonic band and the Rio Grande Valleys own, Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps.  Being in both of these community groups not only allowed great pride for the community but musical growth. 

                In the summer 2011, Abel Ocañas was accepted to the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in Denver, Colorado and placed won a position in the Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma National Intercollegiate Band.  Abel performed with brass ensembles, master classes and was coached by some of the foremost brass artist in the nation including Dr. Brian Bowman and Summit Brass Musicians.

            Abel has been teaching private lessons for 4 years in the Edinburg CISD and was part of the Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps Music Staff as an Assistant Tuba Tech during the off-season in 2011.   Abel Ocañas is currently student teaching at the McAllen High school, Rayburn Elementary and will graduate with a B.A. in Music  May 12, 2012.  Being part of these community/university ensembles and having a huge leadership role on campus organizations has allowed Abel to receive lifelong friendships, great musical experience and the love to teach the great art of Music.
